AP history students from Riverdale’s SAR Academy came to Kittay on October 11th for political conversation and debate with Kittay tenants.

Each group prepared for their debate by reading articles on theme of the morning’s intergenerational gathering, “How did American politics become so divided?”

Tenant Shirley Friedman opened her debate by saying, “Our government’s transparency continues to fuel mistrust.”

Referencing Geoffrey Kabaservice’s recent New York Times editorial about the government shutdown, one SAR student asked, “Did the pursuit of power overtake our politicians’ civic duty?”

SAR’s student history and government teacher, David Steere observed, “This is a very bright group of kids who really appreciate hearing the thought-provoking perspective from people that are two and maybe three generations ahead of them. The elders represent a real living history lesson.”
